The 198th Legislative District of Philadelphia is as diverse and rich with culture as its shape is odd. It boasts seven parks, myriad religious, civic and educational institutions including Philadelphia University, over a dozen elementary, middle & high schools (public, private, charter and religious) as well as innumerable small businesses of all kinds.
This district includes some of the most affluent parts of Philadelphia as well as some of its most impoverished areas.
While the district is majority Black, over a third of its residents come from other varied ethnic backgrounds, and is home to an array of civic, religious and educational institutions that enrich the district.
On the electoral front, the 198th District has nearly 32,000 registered Democrats, and unlike most other districts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, of the eight political wards in its boundaries, not one of those wards is fully encompassed within it borders. The same is true for the six neighborhoods it claims: Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Germantown, East Falls, Nicetown and Logan.
Its diversity is its strength. However, this strength has yet to be felt. And only through dialogue, collaboration and creativity will we fulfill the promise the 198th has to offer its residents and the city of Philadelphia.
